Add to favorites

This is a course where you can visit both Munakata Taisha and Miyajidake Shrine, frequently featured in the media. Additionally, you'll tour two museums showcasing exhibits such as the Shinbara and Yayoi mountain tomb groups, and you can see video explanations in the theater.

Munakata boasts ancient history with its sacred Munakata Taisha and Okinoshima island, deserving more attention despite being a region of significant cultural and historical importance. However, since its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2017 under the "Sacred Island of Okinoshima and Associated Sites in the Munakata Region," the area is gaining more recognition.

Course highlights

●Munakata Taisha Honden
When visiting Munakata, this is a must-visit location. The serene grounds, cloaked in trees, fill the air with a dignified atmosphere that refreshes visitors. The "Takamiya Festival Grounds," said to be where the Munakata Three Goddesses descended, is one of the few ancient ritual sites nationwide. Visitors feel the power of the solemn ambiance. Munakata Taisha venerates the Three Goddesses, children of Amaterasu Omikami. On Okinoshima (Oki-no-Tsu-no-Miya) resides Tagishimahime-no-Kami, on Oshima (Nakatsu-no-Miya) resides Tatsuhime-no-Kami, and on Tajima (Hetsu-no-Miya) resides Ichikishimahime-no-Kami. Collectively known as "Munakata Taisha," many rituals are held at Hetsu-no-Miya.

●Umino Michi Munakata Kan
Located right in front of Munakata Taisha. At the permanent exhibition, you can enjoy the history of Munakata through sound and visuals. The 3D theater introduces the charms of "Okinoshima," aiming for World Heritage registration. There's also a relaxing space where you can enjoy tea. Admission is free.

●Michi no Eki Munakata
A popular roadside station where queues form even before opening, renowned for its fresh seafood. The fish, arriving one after another, often sell out before noon. Locally processed items using local fish and vegetables, as well as fresh fruits, are also popular. At the attached "Ofukuro Shokudo Hamayu," you can enjoy fresh fish dishes in a cafeteria style.

●Shinbara Nuyama Kofungun
Tombs of the influential aristocratic clan "Munakata-kun," who performed rituals on Okinoshima, dating back to the 5th to 6th centuries.
