■Sakushima is the largest manned island in Mikawa Bay, Sakushima prospered in the olden days of sail boats, during the Edo period, when merchant ships named Sengokubune traveling along the Mikawa Bay would dock at its port while waiting for a favorable wind.

The town center flourished with the bustling sea activity including fishing. But in recent years the population has declined and only 250 people live here. Sakushima started the island revitalization project in 1995 with outdoor arts that they make use of the rich nature of the island. Today, it has become a popular destination and approximately 100,000 tourists can come to seek out the nature, art and gourmet food of the island.

The history of Kobo on Sakushima began around the 5th year of the Taisho era when 88 small Kobo temples were built. Over time, many of them were abandoned and decadent.

But the art project started to renovate them in 2009. With the help of art, they were reborn.

Now you can experience 88 Kobo temples pilgrimages to follow the Kobo trails.

The nature of Sakushima shows various appearances in each season. Plums and cherry blossoms bloom in spring, and hydrangea and marvel-of-peru bloom in summer.

In fall, the chestnut tigers, known as migrating butterflies, appear and there are sasanqua roads in winter. Black kites, seagulls, and creatures living on the rocky shore coexist with the nature of the island, creating such a beautiful landscape that cannot be seen in towns.
