Things to do in Hakodate
Goryokaku is the pentagonal-shaped fortress constructed for the purpose of defence against the northern invasion of Japan in 1864. This is the first Vauban style fortress in Japan and designated as a Special Historical Site. Today the site is a famous spot for cherry blossom viewing, serving as a place of relaxation for citizens as well as a popular tourist spot for visitors.
Hill tour is one of the highlights of Hakodate tour. There are a lot of hills in Hakodate, each of them has a distinctive name. Hachiman hill is named after the Hakodate Hachimangu. The beautiful view of the Hakodate harbor is worth the effort of climbing up the hills, this view is also shown in several Japanese TV dramas and Commercials. It was once meandering but now it is straight and decorated with sycamore tree on both sides of the road.
Kanemori Red Brick Warehouse is located at the area, facing Hakodatewan which contains lots of commercial facilities: BAY Hakodate that has several restaurants and shops, Hakodate History Plaza, used as exhibition hall and beer hall, Kanemori Hall which can be used to hold a concert or wedding etc. A part of it still remains a warehouse.
Hakodate is located in the southern part of Hokkaido, popular city that 5 million people visit a year.In 2016,Hakodate bullet train between Shin aomori to Shin Hakodate Hokuto was partially opened, we can go by bullet train from Tokyo now.
